My Rating
A Moveable Feast is my favorite work of Hemingway. It has such a sense of time and place that heightens its realities for the reader and makes you feel like you’re in Paris in the 1920s as a struggling writer with him. And, trust me when I say, you’ll never think of F. Scott Fitzgerald the same way again.

Best Quote
โIf you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.โ
Book Review
Description
A Moveable Feast recounts Ernest Hemingway’s early years as a young, struggling writer in Paris during the 1920s. The book consists of brief vignettes that offer snapshots of both his life and his relationships with fellow writers and artists, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and James Joyce.
Why It Matters on Gilmore Girls
A Moveable Feast contributed to our understanding of the Lost Generation and 1920s Paris literary culture.
The fact that it’s a classic and a symbol of a more high brow intellectual community is appropriate considering Rory reads it to settle a debate with her most cultured boyfriend, Logan.
Who It’s Best For
It’s perfect for fans of Woody Allen’s 2011 film Midnight in Paris, which is set in 1920s Paris and features the lifestyles of Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, and F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. The aesthetic is identical.
Reading Tips
- In addition to pairing it with Midnight in Paris, you can pair it with The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, which it references.
- Read it with a glass of French wine referenced, such as sancerre.
- To learn more about Ernest Hemingway, check out the documentary, Hemingway. It was very interesting and well done!
