Rory settling into her first full year at Chilton and Jess entering Stars Hollow give us an epic list of books from Season 2 of Gilmore Girls to read.
Since 2021, I’ve run a Rory Gilmore reading challenge to read the books on Gilmore Girls, and I recently published the Unofficial Guide to the Books on Gilmore Girls. In other words, these books are my lifestyle, my religion. (Wink!)
So, let me tell you, these books aren’t just props; they’re moments. First, I selected ten times when books were woven oh-so-poignantly into the season’s biggest storylines to entice you. As you might suspect, Rory reads many of these books, and they play into her budding relationship with Jess. Then I shared the full list I tracked episode by episode for my book.
10 Iconic Books From Season 2 of Gilmore Girls

The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand: Rory recommends this classic book about a nonconventional architect to Jess at the Stars Hollow Picnic Basket Auction, saying she read it at age ten. (2.13 “A-Tisket, A-Tasket”)
Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger: Jess looks for this short book of short stories in Rory’s room when her bracelet from Dean is lost. (2.15 “Lost and Found”)
Howl and Other Poems by Allen Ginsberg: Jess “borrows” this nonconformist poetry banned book (think: the Beat Generation) and writes in the margins during their first meeting. (2.05 “Nick and Nora/Sid and Nancy”)
Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens: Rory retaliates to Jess’s book borrowing by calling him “Dodger,” a thief in this classic. (2.05 “Nick and Nora/Sid and Nancy”)
Othello by William Shakespeare: Rory says she’ll read this tragedy about jealousy to Jess when she’s tutoring him. (2.19 “Teach Me Tonight”)
“Paul Revere’s Ride” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: A poem Revolutionary War reenactors refer to. It’s based on a true story about the arrival of the British. (2.17 “Dead Uncles and Vegetables”)
Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare: Rory’s Chilton class reenacts this Shakespearean tragedy of ill-fated love, and it’s not without all kinds of added drama. (2.09 “Run Away, Little Boy”)
The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. by Washington Irving: The entire Bracebridge Dinner is inspired by the Christmas celebrations at Bracebridge Hall in this collection. (2.10 “The Bracebridge Dinner”)
Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom: Outside the Harvard library, Lorelai tells Rory to skip this memoir about a dying teacher. (2.04 “Road Trip to Harvard”)
Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson: Outside the Harvard library, Lorelai tells Rory to skip this nonfiction book about pivoting. (2.04 “Road Trip to Harvard”)
