It’s hard to say why, out of all the outfits Rory wore during Gilmore Girls, her sweater became the most iconic, but here we are, two decades later, still talking about it!
Of course, Rory Gilmore wore her white, oversized fisherman sweater in the Pilot of Gilmore Girls (Season 1, Episode 1— the very first fall episode of Gilmore Girls), while walking around Stars Hollow with Lane and visiting the Independence Inn.
Maybe it’s because it’s so quintessentially New England—just like the show’s Connecticut setting.
Personally, it’s the oversized nature for me. Around the time the show was filmed, this was exactly the type and fit of sweater popular at my preppy school. We used to buy men’s sweaters from J.Crew!
To this day, each fall, I curate the year’s best Rory Gilmore sweater ideas so you can dress like a Gilmore while you take our Rory Gilmore reading challenge to read the books on Gilmore Girls. Below are my top picks for 2026, along with some unique options and ideas for her full outfit. Copperboom!

The Full Outfit

Rory paired her fisherman sweater with dark denim, flat boots, and a leather backpack. I curated a few favorites that match the look:
I chose the Aelfric Eden sweater option because it’s such a huge bestseller on Amazon.
These Chelsea boots have a lug sole that was popular at the time of Gilmore Girls and is still popular today. I wear this brand too because their boots are waterproof!
My favorite new Anthropologie jeans. They have a slightly wide leg, which is popular now, but still look tailored—not sloppy. Most importantly, they are insanely soft and feel like wearing sweatpants. I found them to be true to size.
A convertible Italian leather backpack from Quince feels dark academia but is practical because you can also wear it as a tote or crossbody purse. It also looks less student-like.
A Luke’s Diner travel mug— because Rory loves coffee, and because it truly completes Rory’s aesthetic.
