Though Rory Gilmore has a classic New England style that still looks fashionable today, her Chilton uniform is the one most often recreated as a Halloween costume. I wore it myself as the host of the Rory Gilmore reading challenge to read the books on Gilmore Girls and the author of the Unofficial Guide to the Books on Gilmore Girls!
Rory’s school uniform costume typically includes a blue plaid skirt, a navy blue sweater vest or blazer, and a collared shirt. Accessorize with knee socks, saddle shoes, and a yellow backpack. You can replicate this look on a budget with items you already own or by buying cheap uniform pieces online. This style, along with the white fisherman “Rory Gilmore” sweater, of course, shows Rory’s studious, preppy personality.
How To Get the Look of My Rory Gilmore Costume
School Uniform
- Blue plaid, pleated skirt. Size way up. I’m small and wore a large. Or try a similar option.
- Light blue Oxford shirt. White will also work.
- Navy blue sweater blazer. I wore my favorite sweater blazer, but a cotton or wool navy blue blazer will also work, as will a navy or grey V-neck sweater, cardigan, or V-neck vest. A criss-cross tie also makes for a great accessory.
- White knee socks. I wore compression socks, which serve double duty on flights! You can also wear tights in grey, navy, or white.
- Saddle shoes. Simple ballet flats are also an easy substitution.
Optional Accessories
- Luke’s Diner mug. Since I didn’t have Rory’s iconic yellow backpack, I carried my Luke’s mug. You can accessorize with either or both.
- Add a Chilton sticker to your top to make it look even more like a uniform!
